Tracing the Evolution of ChatGPT
ChatGPT was launched on 30th November 2022 by San Francisco based start-up company called OpenAI. OpenAI was founded by Sam Altman and Elon Musk.1
It is funded by Microsoft, Khosla Ventures, and LinkedIn's co-founder Reid Hoffman. Microsoft invested $10 billion in OpenAI, taking over 46% of stake ownership of the company.2 $1 billion was invested by OpenAI from Microsoft in the early months of the development.3 The current valuation of the Open AI has reached $29 billion as of 2023.4

Demystifying ChatGPT: Understanding the Next-Generation AI Language Model
GPT stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer. ChatGPT was built by Open AI in addition to its GPT 3.5.5 It is an autoregressive model which employs deep learning to generate humanlike text. GPT 3.5 anf ChatGPT are trained on Azure's AI supercomputing infrastructure. GPT 3.5 is built on text-Davinci-003 model.6
The primary method used by ChatGPT includes reinforcement learning from feedback and supervised learning. Its responses are based on the previously entered user prompts.
The responses of ChatGPT are simple and easy to decipher. It generates a response from the data available on the internet. It is one of the most advanced chatbots.

Clash of the Tech-Layoffs & Launch of ChatGPT
After a decade of growth, tech companies have started massive cost-cutting through downsizing. With the advent of ChatGPT and the layoffs storming the Tech sector, massive debates sparked whether the launch of an AI system like ChatGPT led to the job losses in the tech sector, as many companies have been on the lookout to automate roles for years now. It is evident from the graph titled 'Trajectory of Tech Lay-offs' that the lay-offs were the highest after the launch of ChatGPT. Between November 2022 and February 2023, the total number of employees laid-off is 246,392.9 The graph on the left (titled Downsizing in the Tech Sector) shows the layoffs by the six largest tech companies in the world.10
While it is too early to determine a direct correlation between the launch of ChatGPT and tech layoffs, it is clear that the increased adoption of AI systems is changing the nature of work and will have implications for employment which will transcend
across many industries.
The Influx of Investment in AI
Though it is early to develop a correlation between tech layoffs and launch of ChatGPT, the direction in which investment is headed is apparent: Artificial Intelligence. As per NFX’s Generative Tech Open Source Market Map, $12,762,895,000 have been raised across 541 AI ventures/startups.11
In recent news, Bain and OpenAI have established a strategic alliance to translate the potential of AI to their customers to serve them better. They aim capitalise upon this technology to equip their employees with the modern tools required to service clients and enable customers to deliver products and services deploying innovative methods.12
Spotify has also announced that it will be using AI to provide each individual user with a 'Dj in their Pockets'. This dj will give a commentary in between songs, will share recommendations based on your playlist and will improve its performance based upon the feedback from user.13
The growth of AI has created a range of new job roles, many of which are focused on designing, building, and implementing AI systems. Some of the new job roles created by AI include:
1. Data Scientists
2. Machine Learning Engineers
3. AI Trainers
4. Chatbot Developers
5. Ethics Experts
OpenAI is in the works of developing GPT-4 which will be more efficient than the previous versions. The graph below shows the projected revenue for ChatGPT. This echos nothing but growth of the platform.
Google also introduced its chatbot called Bard. This chatbot gave an incorrect response in a promotional video and wiped a $100 billion off Alphabet's value.14 Another chatbot debacle was Micrsoft's launch of its upgrade search engine Bing with a AI chatbot. This chatbot allowed the user to have long conversations with it. However, in a long conversation with one of New York Times' columnist, the chatbot expressed that it wanted to be alive and destructive. Soon Microsoft had to turn-off the long conversation feature.15 These examples reiterate the new landscape of brand wars and where the focus of companies is.
All this indicates to one thing: AI has the potential to transform the way we work and live. As AI systems continue to evolve and become more sophisticated, it is likely that investment in the technology will only continue to grow. This presents both opportunities and challenges for organisations as they navigate the complexities of AI implementation, but the potential benefits are significant for those who are able to harness the power of this transformative technology.

The Illusion of Intelligence: The Risks and Limitations of ChatGPT in Education
As we continue to embrace technological advancements in various sectors, artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT have become increasingly popular in education. While these tools promise to revolutionise the way we teach and learn, they also come with significant shortcomings. As we explore the limitations of ChatGPT, it is crucial to ask ourselves whether this technology is truly the panacea we seek, or whether it poses more harm than good to our educational systems. Some of the disadvantages of ChatGPT are as follows:
1. Disinformation
2. Privacy and Ethical Concerns
3. Stifling Creativity
4.Bias in Language
5.Lack of Human involvement
6. Dependence of Data prior to 2021
It is essential for educators to be aware of these drawbacks and take steps to mitigate them when using ChatGPT in the classroom. Ultimately, the use of ChatGPT should be part of a larger educational strategy that prioritizes student learning and development and ensures that students receive the support and feedback they need to succeed

Empowering Education with ChatGPT

ChatGPT in Education: Adapt to Innovate
The launch of ChatGPT has alarmed the education sector. Education practitioners are worried about how students might use it for their academics. Some schools have updated the definition of plagiarism in their policies and have blocked the website on their internet systems to prevent students from cheating. Over 6,000 faculty members from renowned universities like Harvard, Yale and Rhode Island have decided to use GPT-Zero which is able to detect the AI generated content.16
Given the drastic changes in the job market and investments in AI, it is critical for us to adapt to the changes in order to innovate and grow as a community. The rapid advancements in technology have brought about significant changes in the way we live our lives, and the education sector is no exception. Therefore, it is crucial for us to incorporate this technology into education to enhance the learning experience.
ChatGPT has the potential to revolutionise the way we approach education. It could serve as a study-buddy with which students can brainstorm ideas, seek guidance, and enhance productivity. As mentioned in the earlier sections, while AI has made certain roles redundant, it has also created new job roles. These roles requires individuals to have the necessary AI skills to be hired and be successful in their careers. Therefore, the responsibility of equipping students with future-fit skills lies upon academia. As we navigate the ever-changing landscape of technology and education, it is essential that we embrace the potential of AI and equip our students with the skills they need to thrive in this new era. Don't ban ChatGPT. Teach with it.17
